Here are some helpful tips for those who are new to Divine Liturgy.
#1 Relax and Watch
Come and experience what’s going on around you. Don’t feel required to participate beyond your comfort zone. We know you won’t get it right the first time, we didn’t either.
#2 Sit By Someone Who Can Teach You
Divine Liturgy was made mostly for a people who were mostly illiterate. The gestures and responses are simple, but reverent. They repeat quite often, and as such by your third or fourth liturgy you should have a pretty good idea of where you are.
#3 Don’t Speak or Read Ukrainian?
Not a problem! We perform the Divine Liturgy half in English and half in Ukrainian. The sung responses can be easily seen in the book located on the back of the pew. If in doubt, refer back to tips 1 and 2.
#4 When do I make the sign of the cross?
Notice a lot of crossing? We make the sign of the cross every time the priest blesses us, when the deacon blesses us with incense, and when the Trinity is referred to by name. Eastern Catholics make the sign of the cross from right to left, as opposed to left to right. But, while you’re learning, do what’s comfortable and natural.
#5 Can I Receive Communion?
Any Catholic in good standing with their church, may under the usual circumstances (no serious or mortal sins) may receive the most precious gifts and partake in the mystical supper.
#6 How Do I Receive Communion?
Simply join the communion line; cross your arms across your chest to indicate you intend to receive; and when you approach the priest or deacon, lower your mouth close to the chalice. Then open your mouth like a baby bird. The priest or deacon will put the precious gifts into your mouth with a spoon (myrnyky). Then close your mouth, make the sign of the cross and feel free to venerate an icon to pray or return to your seat.
#7 Stay After Liturgy to Meet Fellow Parishioners and Come Back Next Week
A major aspect of the Byzantine Rite churches is an emphasis on community, and we all get together to catch up and have a snack in the community room immediately following Divine Liturgy.
